How to Wash a Rug

Rugs bring style, comfort, and warmth to a room. They also act like magnets for dirt, allergens, pet hair, and odors. Washing a rug the right way keeps your home cleaner and adds years to the rug. Whether you've got a hand-knotted Oriental piece or a basic synthetic, the method depends a lot on the material.

Why it matters

Rugs sit underfoot catching everything, food crumbs, pet accidents, dust mites, and bacteria. That buildup affects indoor air and can leave the rug smelling or looking rough. Washing refreshes the look and clears out allergens vacuuming alone can't reach, which is a real plus for homes with kids, pets, or allergy sufferers. It also protects the rug itself, dirt grinds the fibers down like sandpaper, so regular cleaning keeps it in better shape. And it protects the floor underneath, since moisture and debris can seep through the backing into hardwood, laminate, or tile.

Know your material first

Different fibers react differently to water, detergent, and scrubbing.

  • Wool: soft and durable, but sensitive to heat and too much moisture. Often needs professional care.
  • Silk: delicate, not suited to DIY washing. Best left to specialists.
  • Cotton: more washable than wool or silk, but can shrink if it's not dried right.
  • Synthetic (nylon, polyester, polypropylene): durable and usually safe to clean yourself.
  • Shag: long fibers that trap dirt and need special attention.

Always check the care label. No label? Test a hidden corner with water and mild detergent to check for colorfastness.

Washing by hand

Handwashing is the safest route for most rugs, especially wool, cotton, and delicate synthetics.

You'll need a bucket of cool or lukewarm water, mild liquid detergent or rug shampoo, a soft brush or sponge, and towels or a wet/dry vacuum.

Mix the detergent into the water. Lay the rug flat and gently scrub in small sections, following the fiber direction. Rinse with clean water until all the soap's out. Blot or vacuum the excess water, then lay it flat to dry, flipping it once the top is dry so the underside dries too. Avoid harsh chemicals and aggressive scrubbing.

Can you machine wash it?

Some rugs, yes, depending on material and construction. Small, lightweight cotton or synthetic rugs may handle a standard machine. Only wash rugs labeled machine washable, use cold water and mild detergent on a gentle cycle, and skip bleach and fabric softener. Air dry only, never the dryer. Don't machine wash wool, shag, Oriental, or rubber-backed rugs.

Wool and shag

For wool, use cold water and a wool-safe detergent, don't soak it. Sponge or lightly brush the surface, rinse, blot, and dry flat in the shade, since direct sun fades and shrinks it. For shag, vacuum with an upholstery or handheld attachment. To deep clean, spot-treat stains with mild detergent, lightly scrub with a sponge, avoid soaking, and dry thoroughly with fans, flipping halfway through.

Pet stains and odors

Move fast. Blot up as much liquid as you can with paper towels, use an enzyme-based cleaner to break down the waste and odor, then rinse and blot again to clear residue. For stubborn stains or smells that won't quit, our chemical-free odor and stain removal service targets pet messes at the source.

Drying it right

Bad drying leads to mold, mildew, and warping. Lay the rug flat in a ventilated space, run fans or open windows, and flip it after a few hours to dry both sides. Don't hang heavy rugs, it stretches the fibers. Wool and thick rugs can take up to 48 hours.

When to call us

Some rugs need expert care, antiques, handmade or silk pieces, rugs with mold or water damage, anything too large to move or dry, or stains and odors that DIY hasn't budged. Our area rug cleaning and oriental rug cleaning services use safe, low-moisture methods that protect your rug's value while getting it truly clean.
