How to Get Paint Out of Carpet

Paint and carpet don't mix, but a spill isn't the end of the world. Whether you're mid-renovation or the kids got a little too creative with their art supplies, the trick is acting fast and following the right steps. We've handled every kind of paint stain, from bright latex splotches to dried-on acrylic, and the methods below are what work.

Before you start cleaning

Take a couple minutes to set up. If the spill's in a busy room, block it off so nobody tracks paint across the rest of the carpet. Slide a plastic tarp or trash bag under the stained area if you can, especially with rugs, so paint doesn't seep into the subfloor. Open windows and run a fan, particularly for oil-based paint, to cut the fumes and help it dry once you're done. If you rent or might file a warranty claim, snap a photo first.

What you'll need

  • Clean white cloths or paper towels
  • Mild dish soap (a grease-cutting one)
  • Spray bottle or bowl, plus cold water
  • Sponge or soft brush
  • Plastic scraper or dull knife
  • Mineral spirits or acetone (oil-based paint only)
  • Fan or dehumidifier
  • Gloves if your skin's sensitive

Know your paint

The type of paint changes everything about how you clean it.

Latex (water-based). The easiest, especially while wet. Dish soap and water usually does it. The longer it sits, the deeper it soaks, so move quick.

Acrylic. Like latex but with plastic polymers that dry faster and grip harder. Once it's dry it forms a flexible coating and gets tougher to remove.

Oil-based. The stubborn one. It needs a solvent and a careful hand, since it penetrates deeper and the solvents call for good ventilation.

Step by step

  1. Act fast. Gently blot the paint with a white cloth, no hard pressing or smearing. For a big spill, work from the outside edges inward.
  2. Identify the type. Check the paint can. Latex or acrylic gets a gentle cleaner. Oil-based means solvents and extra caution.
  3. Mix your solution. For latex or acrylic, 1 teaspoon dish soap in 1 cup warm water. For oil-based, dampen a cloth with a little mineral spirits or acetone, ventilate, and wear gloves.
  4. Dab the stain. Blot from the edges inward, using a clean part of the cloth each time. Repeat, it takes patience. For dried paint, let the solution sit a bit first.
  5. Rinse and dry. Wipe with a cloth dampened in cold water, blot dry, and set up a fan or dehumidifier. Stay off the area until it's fully dry.

Tough or dried stains

Loosen dried paint with a scraper or old credit card first. Apply your solution and let it sit 5 to 10 minutes before blotting. You'll likely need a few passes, so don't rush. Skip bleach and ammonia, they can bleach or burn the fibers. Test any product in a hidden corner first. And dry it thoroughly, because damp carpet is where mold gets started.

Carpet type matters too

Nylon is durable and cleans up easier. Polyester resists stains but fights you on oil-based paint. Wool is natural and needs gentle handling. Olefin (common in basements) resists moisture but can stain more easily. Knowing what you've got tells you how aggressive you can be.
