How to Clean a Microfiber Couch

Microfiber can be a little tricky to clean, but you've probably got everything you need already, dish soap, rubbing alcohol, and some baking soda or cornstarch for stains and smells. Vacuum the sofa first, mix up your dish soap and water or load rubbing alcohol into a spray bottle, then sponge or spritz lightly, work from top to bottom, rinse, let it air dry, and brush the fibers back into place. That's the whole thing.

People go with microfiber because it's durable, affordable, and resists most stains thanks to its tightly woven synthetic fibers, which keep spills from setting in deep the way they do on cotton. The downside: it's polyester-based, so it's prone to water marks and it loves oil. Hair products, skin oils, and dust pile up on the high-touch spots like the headrest, armrests, and the ottoman, the places your hands and head hit most.

A little upkeep goes a long way. Vacuum weekly to grab surface dirt before it grinds in. Handle spills the second they happen. Give the whole couch a thorough cleaning at least every season, sooner with pets or kids. And always check the tag codes on the manufacturer's care label before you start.

Dish soap method

Start by vacuuming every surface, using the crevice tool and upholstery brush to get the undersides, seams, and anywhere dust collects. Then pour 4 cups of warm water into a bowl, add a quarter cup of dish soap, and stir until it's sudsy. Fill a second bowl with plain water.

Dip a sponge or scrub brush into the suds only, not the water. Starting at the top of the cushion or the back of the couch, spread the suds and scrub in small circles. Working top to bottom keeps dirty suds from dripping onto sections you've already done. Rinse the sponge in clean water often and wring it out as you go. When you're finished, wipe the couch with a slightly damp microfiber cloth and let it air dry completely. It may feel stiff afterward, so run a vacuum or upholstery brush over it to fluff the fibers back up.

Rubbing alcohol method

Vacuum the whole couch first. Pour rubbing alcohol into a spray bottle and lightly spritz, starting at the top. The alcohol targets the stain and lifts it from the surrounding fibers. While it's damp, use a sponge, soft brush, or white cloth to capture the stain and any dirt, rinsing and wringing out the sponge between passes. Let it air dry, then brush to lift and fluff the fibers.

Stains and odors

Grease. Sprinkle cornstarch on the spot and work it in with an old toothbrush. Let it sit an hour to absorb the oil, then follow up with the dish soap or alcohol method.

Chewing gum. Put ice cubes in a sealed bag and set it on the gum to harden it. Use a dull knife or your fingernail to break it away, working slowly so you don't damage the fabric. Refreeze as needed. If a stain's left, finish with one of the methods above.

Odors. Got musty pet or everyday smells? Right before bed, sprinkle baking soda over the whole couch and brush it in with a soft-bristled brush. Next morning, vacuum it off and the smell goes with it.
