9 Tips to Remove Cat Urine Smell From Your Home

Cat urine might be the worst smell in the house. It's sharp, acidic, and weirdly stubborn. If you've got a cat who likes to go where they shouldn't, you already know scrubbing alone won't cut it. Good news is there are real ways to clear it. Put down the regular spray for a minute, because this calls for a different approach.

1. Prep the spot first

Before you put anything on it, deal with the wet. Blot up as much urine as you can, fast, before it sinks in. Rinse the area with a little cool water, then press it dry with paper towels or a clean cloth to lift more out. Anything washable that got hit goes straight in the laundry. Speed matters here more than anything.

2. Reach for an enzyme cleaner

Once the area's prepped, use a cleaner made for pet messes. Skip the all-purpose stuff and grab an enzyme-based formula. Enzymes break down the bacteria in the urine, which is what actually kills the smell instead of covering it. These work on mattresses, clothes, and carpet alike. Read the label first.

3. Baking soda

Still catching a whiff after cleaning? Totally normal. It usually takes more than one trick. Once the spot's dry, sprinkle baking soda over it and let it sit, overnight if you can, then vacuum it up. Baking soda absorbs the odor and carries it away. Toss in a little cinnamon if you want it to smell nice after.

4. White vinegar

Vinegar is acidic, so it neutralizes the alkaline salts dried urine leaves behind, which are often what's still stinking even after you've cleaned. Mix it half-and-half with water in a spray bottle. It's safe on walls, rugs, and around pets. Spray it, let it dry, and the vinegar smell fades in a day or two along with the urine.

5. Rubbing alcohol

The ammonia in cat pee is a big part of why it reeks, and rubbing alcohol cuts through it fast. Don't pour it on, that just soaks the area. Dampen a cloth and press it into the spot instead. Let it dry. Never mix alcohol with bleach.

6. Coffee grounds

Coffee fights odors, so it works here too. Dry your used grounds in the freezer first, then sprinkle them over the spot, leave overnight, and vacuum like you would baking soda. Wet grounds just make a mess, so dry them out first.

7. Seal the subfloor

Sometimes urine soaks through into the wood underneath. If that's happened, you'll have to pull up that section of carpet. Treat the wood with baking soda or coffee grounds, then seal it with a stain-blocking, oil-based primer. You may need to replace the padding too. It's a job, but it ends the smell.

8. Freshen the air last

Once everything's clean and deodorized, candles and diffusers help keep the room smelling good. This won't fix anything on its own, so only do it after the real cleaning is done.

9. Call in help
